Local Source - Drenthe Heath Sheep

Over the past 20 years, Dutch artist Claudy Jongstra has built an artistic practice intertwined with the natural cycles of her local environment of rural Friesland, in the Northern Netherlands. Wool is a renewable, versatile and tactile resource. The fiber’s natural properties yield it as a unique artistic medium. Her flock of Drenthe Heath sheep - Europe’s oldest breed of sheep - provide their wool for Claudy’s textiles. Raised primarily for vegetation management, not meat production, they also contribute to the ecological preservation of the Dutch moorlands. Each hand-felted artwork is a poetic marriage of wool’s historical, cultural and environmental significance, fused with a contemporary aesthetic.
